I first saw his work on art 21 years ago and it was a revelation. His mix of nonlinear comic book-style narrative, mixed with his skewed take on the history of abstraction sets him apart from so many of his peers.

Kilgallen was a central figure in the Mission School Movement. Her paintings and murals were commonly based in the folk art of the Bay Area. Sadly Margaret died of Cancer in 2001, but her spirit and creativity lives on in her amazing work.

Doze Green is a world renowned street artist, widely respected as a pioneer of B-Boy culture, Green has been embraced by the fine art community. I stopped by the Johnathan Levine gallery in Chelsea last week, and saw Doze's latest work. Most of the show was heavily influenced by street art, but I found the first image below, to be much more interesting. This enormous painting (8' x 13') fascinating. It is ripe with a diverse characters, setting up an interesting narrative for the viewer.

I stumbled upon Chris Duncan's show at the Jeff Baily gallery in Chelsea. Duncan, a SanFransisco artist has a really interesting take on the typical west coast aesthetic. The show featured sculptures, paintings, drawings, collage, and some interesting architectural elements. I really fell for his "drawings" witch used wood putty, spray paint, acrylic and gouache on paper. The show also intrigued me because the show title (faith/void split) was taken from a early discord records split 12", and as you may know music informs much of my own work. I love living in New York when I find something as new and exciting as Duncan's exhibition.

I got a chance to see her work a few weeks back at the Kinz, Tillou + Feigen Gallery in Chelsea. I have been kinda obsessed with crude geometric shapes as of late and Coates is great example of such imagery. Her "networks" of shapes and colors are quite visually stunning.

There is an epic struggle that takes place in New York Artists, Jane Fine's work. The canvas is a battlefield in the strugle betwwen figuration and classic abstraction. I find Fine's "pop" art both wimsical and haunting. Fine is represented by pierogi gallery (brooklyn/leipzig)

I first became aware of Devandra as a musician, He was this mysterious long hair from San Francisco, via Venezuela releasing weird lo-fi home recordings. I was aware that he did the art work for the albums and have followed his art career even closer than the music. He shows sporadically all over the world and have seen tons of random images on the web. His drawings are both intensely detailed and simple. Devandra's work is often on found paper that is often stained, giving his work an archival quality, similar to an outsider artist like Henry Darger, and specifically Martin Ramirez. Banhart's cult following in both genres makes him a truly intriguing figure to watch.

Ellen Gallagher is a pretty amazing artist. never afraid to try something new and different. Her installation "eXelento" is one of my favorite pieces of art I've ever seen. This mixed media framed installation is made up of plasticine, ink and found paper on canvas.
